In February, Dr. David Sears, one of Heritage’s beloved Medical Directors retired. Replacing him will be Dr. Eric Metzler who also works as Medical Director for Good Samaritan’s Manzano del Sol Village. Dr. Metzler has practiced Family Medicine for 4 years in Massachusetts, then 19 years in rural Maine before coming to New Mexico to study Geriatrics and Hospice Medicine. Since 2010, he has worked in local nursing facilities and hospices and is eager to offer his wide experience to Heritage Hospice. He has a passion for coordinating care and working closely with the hospice team to fully understand the unique condition of each and every patient. We are very lucky and excited to have Dr. Metzler as part of our team. Dr. Metzler will also be working closely with Dr. Belyn Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz is an integral part of the Hospice team and has been working as one of Heritage’s Medical Directors since early 2017.

Heritage Hospice has received the SHP Best Premier Performer Award for achieving an overall CAHPS Hospice caregiver satisfaction score that ranked in the TOP 5% of all SHP clients for 2016! For those who may not be familiar with CAHPS, this is a survey that is sent out to the primary caregiver after the hospice patient has passed away. The survey covers all aspects of care that was provided by the hospice team. SHP is a nationwide company, so for Heritage to be in the top 5% is a tremendous feat! This is a true reflection of our dedicated Hospice Team as they continually provide high quality and compassionate care to Heritage’s patients and loved ones, 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.

On Saturday, June 17th, Heritage was asked to present at University of New Mexico’s Long Term Care 2-day Conference which covered the many facets of long term care. This free conference was open to the public and was held at UNM’s Education Conference Center. Heritage’s talented 6-person panel consisted of Susan Lopez, Susan Lueckenhoff, Dr. Belyn Schwartz, Jeff Spellins, Jenny McGregor and Daniel Faulkner. The panel was led by Brent Sultemeier, who proved to be a natural as an MC since he easily created a relaxed and engaging dynamic for the team. The two-hour discussion focused on the Criteria and Qualifications for Home Health and Hospice. The hope is that Heritage can continue to participant in similar types of educational events in our community not only for Home Health and Hospice but also Services at Home. If you are interested in having this type of education provided or know if a venue, please contact us at 505-796-3200 and ask for Brent Sultemeier, Director of Sales and Marketing.
